Not how you want to start your boating day at the ramp..Don't unhook that bow hook before you back down the ramp ;) ..

Too many people try to launch like this - with similar results!

Re: Not a good start to the day...

you know, I think some people just really don't get it. A couple of months ago, a guy walks up while I'm unhooking the bow with the boat in the water and says I should have undone it before I got down there because this was taking longer than it should.

I said there was no way I was gonna unhook it till the boat was at the water, no matter how long it takes. He stormed off muttering something under his breath instead off giving the customary helpful shove off that so many other boaters do in the same situation.

To boot, I've got a roller trailer. I guess some people think all boats launch like they think they should, or just don't understand risk. Or don't care.

Least the motor was up!Never let anyone hurry you at the ramp, the same idiot once he gets on the ramp will take all day. Finding out things ain't right ten miles down the road kinda sucks.!

After seeing the picture above, I will unhook my boat when in water and started. I have always unhook my boat before backing it into the water. I guess if this would have happen to me I bet l learn pretty quick. Also what jofish said is true. NEVER let anyone hurry you when you try to launch your boat. If you hurry it might ruin your day.

Re: Not a good start to the day...

While I agree that you should never rush yourself - for any reason - while at the ramp, I do think that the majority of tasks can and should be completed before occupying the ramp lane(s).

Yes, I keep the bow hook fastened until the boat is in the water and the engine has been started. I had to "manually" trailer my 23' cuddy on a recent weekend (throttle control assembly failure) and it wasn't all that enjoyable!

Anyway, a few of the things that should be done before occupying the ramp, in my opinion, are:
•
• Load cooler(s)
• Remove trailer straps (transom)
• Load toys (skis, wakeboards, etc)

Likewise, once the vessel has been backed off the trailer, get out of the way. Now, I don't mean to be rude, but seriously... Don't have your first mate (or galleyhand) sit on the dock holding your precious boat against the dock while you go off to park your tow vehicle. The ramps that I use on a weekly basis have outside lanes that are specifically meant for docking while parking/retrieving tow vehicles. Do the people who engage in this activity realize that there are no cleats on the inside of the dock for a reason? (In situations where this luxury does not exist, forgive me... I understand there is no other option.)

This is obviously a topic that I (and I'm sure the rest of us) could ramble on and on about, but I will hold my tongue - for now ;)

Happy boating!

I always keep my boat hooked to the trailer, but only after coming/joining this site. Prior to this I used to always unhook it. Glad none of the boats I own have fallen off the trailer.
And I also agree with bcj19. Very good points.

Amen. Especially that last part with my finicky
1983 Johnson outboard. Started and warmed up
for a minute or two. THEN unhooked. :)

Re: Not a good start to the day...

Last summer I was waiting to reload wife crusing around with my daughter in the boat in the sun with the top folded up ready for the loading , there was a guy fussing with his engine .. now he was trying and it was one of those .. I almost got it .. that seems to go on and on but the other side a few young boys with a ski boat had it tied to the dock in the way of the ramp. I asked what was going on they said that they had left the keys at home and their friend went to get them. I told them that the other guy was having problems and working on it and asked if they could please clear the ramp. One of them (out of 5) slowly walked out from under the shade tree put one foot on the boat and slowly started to push .. at this point I just jumped in and shoved the thing out of the way .. Man I was fried!

Re: Not a good start to the day...

I launch and retrieve by myself. I wouldn't think of unhooking the bow hook or safety chain before the boat was in the water. I agree that it shouldn't take as long some do. If you are ready it shouldn't take more then two to three mins to get out of the way. On more then one occasion I have pissed off some guy when I pull up to the dock after them and on my trailer, tied down, hooked up and gone before they have there boat on there trailer (again by myself). To add insult to injury more then one time I hear from the wife or significant other “wow your fast” or “we haven't seemed to figure this out like you have”. I then usually see steam come out from under the collar of the husband. I have gotten so good at it that even when I take people with me I still tend to do most of it alone.

Re: Not a good start to the day...

I wish I could forward this thread to some of the morons in my boat club! f_inscreenname I do the same as you, and get similar comments. I usually back into the water, fire up the engine, go up onto the deck and bend down and release the hook. I then go back to the helm and gracefully back the boat off the trailer.... all the way to the end of the dock (so others can come in in front of me). Takes about 2 minutes. Guess what? My boat club has banned me from doing it because they say it's unsafe! Like, where is it unsafe? They won't answer that question.

Chris.............
