I need any help i can get with my outboard. it is all freshly rebuilt. and only runs on cylinders 1 & 2. Now what don't make sense is all 4 are getting fuel, and compression is 145 across all 4. now i don't have a proper dva meter so i used my normal one. and the output of both control modules is 186 volts. which don't make sense that it isn't enough because it runs the first 2 cylinders. so i don't know where to go from here. i tried talking to the marinas for help but of coarse all they say is bring it in and we'll look at it. so ill reach to a better source, all you iboat friends

P.S. if there are any that live close to Lansing,MI that would rather i give you a call and explain it i would be more then happy to..

Welcome to iboats. :)

Well, at least we know it's a 4-cylinder. But that's not enough info. We need horsepower and model year or a model number. It could be anything from a 105 to a 140, 60s thru 90s. Are the ignition components Blue?

Prestolite ignition. Two CD modules driving two coils each. The top two and bottom two are paired. The stator is making power, so that probably isn't it. Coils are pretty reliable, put those on the bottom of the list too. That leaves the trigger or a CD module.

Triggers are also very simple and reliable, except for the wires. They like to break inside the insulation where you can't see it. Usually where they exit the trigger and at the fork terminals. Gently pull on each fork connector and see if any let loose. Don't pull hard enough to cause the break.

CD modules are probably the weakest link. Switch CDs and see if the problem travels with the CD if the broken wire angle doesn't supply an easy solution.

If you are reading the same power to all four coils, and only two are firing, that means that all four triggers are working--otherwise the box that powers the two non working cylinders would not put power to the coils. 187 volts is a little low but you are using a regular meter, which can not capture peak voltage, which should be around 250. Remove the spark plugs and ground them or put in a spark tester. If you are getting spark on all four, then it is the fuel system that needs checking. If you are not, then you need to check the coils and plug wires. Be sure to check and DOUBLE CHECK the ground wires from the coils. also check the connectors behind the electronics mounting plate.
