not charging?

!972- 85 hp rude. I hooked up a votage gage and it says it is not charging. I am not sure I have it hooked up right. I hooked a hot wire from the ignition and a ground wire. I also tried it from the connetor block on the back of the motor.Is there a special way to hook it up?

Hook a volt meter across the terminals of the battery without the motor running and note the reading, it should be around 12.5V. Then run the engine and hook the volt meter across the terminals of the battery again and note the reading. If your charging system is working you should get a higher reading when the motor is running. On my 79 115hp rude I get a reading of about 12.5V with the motor not running and a reading of about 16V when the motor is running. Hope that helps.
