Not fuel starvation...

I've taken my 86 bayliner (125 hp) out a few times now. We seem to do fine until we get out to the bay and open up teh thrittle. It runs fine for a good while, then usually on the return home, it abruptly loses power, and if I don't let off the gas to idle, it will die.
Also, as soon as the engine starts to run rough, the fuel gauge turns off, so I know its an electrical issue. I have a service manual, but that is almost completely engine wiring diagrams. Where do I start?

Thaks in advance...

You might want to start with your coils and get them tested. What throws me is you can drop to an idle and it will not die. Most coil problems result in in the motor suddenly dying.

Maybe a better question to ask is what would cause the fuel gauge to cut out at the same time the ignition acts up???

Any guess is appreciated.
