Ok, i have a 1979 55hp evinrude outboard. i have replaced the powerpack, all the connections are fine. coming from the stator, i have between 4 and 6 volts out of 2 of the pins. Like This, ' . . ' on the two outside pins, im getting 4 to 6 volts, but in the center two, in not getting anything, also when i Ohm the center 2, i get nothing. do i have a bad stator?

With the ohm meter set to high ohms, the reading between the Brown wire and the Brown/Yellow wire should be 475 +/- 75 ohms (400 to 550 ohms). If within these readings, the stator can be considered okay.

Still with the meter set to high ohms, between either of those wires to ground should result in no reading at all. Any reading here would indicate a short.

The proper method to test the spark is to have the spark plugs removed, and had a spark tester rigged whereas a gap can be set to 7/16". The spark should hump this gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP!

Do not test the spark by simply using the spark plugs.

Using the testing method as above, disconnect the large RED electrical connector at the engine, then crank the engine by jumping the starter solenoid. If you have spark with that RED plug disconnect but do not with it connected, in all probability the ignition switch is shorted, in which case, rerplace it.
