This is what I found draining my lower unit to put fresh oil in.

What to do know?

Re: Not Good!

Well, it might be nice to know just what make and model you are working on.

Were the gaskets under the Vent and Drain plugs new and fresh? They MUST be replaced after EVERY service.

Finish the draining; install the plugs with new gaskets and pump air in to see if it is sealed. Look for air coming out around the prop shaft.

If it still leaks, replace all seals in the lower end.

Re: Not Good!

I see the problem-

You were drinking Keystone. That's where things started to go downhill.

Regarding your question, "What do you know?".......

I know very little. Very, very little.

"Now"

Sorry long night.

I drink Busch, the keystone was Andy's, one of my co-workers.

This is my first outboard, so please bear with me.

I have what I believe is a Clinton 5hp. J9 1101.

Re: Not Good!

Did you run the motor before you drained it? I wouldn't tear into an old Clinton for that problem. Get the plug gaskets and flush out the lower unit with mineral spirits. Use small bottle and put the spirits in the top and let them drain out the bottom (plastic condiment bottle works good). Leave the plugs out and let drain a dry for a day. Fill it back up and run it and see what happens.
