not much speed

hi guys new to boating just got a 88 bayliner capri 1500 with a force 50 hp the motor fires right up put it in gear to go it sounds like its doing a hundred but its barely moving and after about ten minutes the buzzer goes off and it starts to over heat please any help would be greatly appreciated

I have the same motor just a 1990. Mine started fine and ran but very slow. It turned out that I have no spark to 1 cylinder. staill trying to fix it. check spark and do a compression test. thats what I was advised to do when I first had my problem.

I agree with foodfisher, spun prop. Put a mark on the inner and outer part of the hub ,run it in gear ,and check your marks to see if they have moved from one another,simple. hope this helps, keep us posted on what you find. MOPARMAN

alright checked prop it is fine checked spark plugs both have spark but top one is oily the bottom one looks like its burning better it is dry on top with a hint of brown as for over heating fixed that the thermostat is shot still no speed doing about 15 mph at full throttle
