I had just bought my first boat and before finalizing the deal, the seller wanted to take me out on the water for a test run. He wanted to make sure I knew everything I needed to about the boat. For the test drive, my dad had come along because he has owned a boat since I was yong and thought he could ask questions I didn't know how. So on this launch, my dad was in the boat with the seller and I was pulling the trailer out to park. Anyway, everything on the test run went pretty smooth.
On the next weekend, we were taking the boat out on the lake near our camp and invited friends to join us. This time I was in the boat for launch and my wife was pulling the trailer to the parking lot. She backed us into the water, I started the engine, put it into reverse and back off of the trailer. On my way over to the courtesy dock, I tried to lower the outdrive all of the down into the water. I pushed the two buttons on both side of the throttle that were towards the back of the boat. Nothing was happening. The prop was in the water just enough to get us to the dock, tied up and then i tried again and again, nothing. The lower unit wouldn't move. After a few minutes, I could smell something that smelled like an electrical fire. I killed the engine and grabbed the cellphone and called good ol' dad.
By the time dad got there, I was pretty mad and upset that our maiden voyage was already ruined. Dad came down to the dock, asked what the problem was and then proceeded to push the one button closest to the driver on the throttle to lower the unit. The unit went into the water just like it was supposed to. The one part of the test run with the seller I missed was lowering the unit into the water. One button to lower, two to raise.
I gave dad a hug and away we went and had a great day of boating.
