Not running right?

Well thanks to this forum and its members I've found out the year and and proper mix for my motor.

1990 Mariner 115

My motor just came back from being rebuilt over the winter (bore job, pistons, rings, ect...) I took it out today for the first time for sea trials and break in but it wasn't working right.

Fired right up and idled like a million bucks on the trailer, decided to go for a little ride and slowly break it in at low rpm. Once out on the water the motor seemed to run fine at low rpm (below 2000 ). After cruising around for a little bit I tried going a little faster this is when it started to hesitate and surge.

It would run fine at 1/4 throttle but as soon as I tried to go a little faster it would surge and the rpm would jump up and down. Possible fuel delivery problem or ignition??

This is a 2 +2 engine but I am not sure how that works?? I think that 2 cylinders fire at low rpm (2000ish) then all 4 kick in at hire rpm. This makes me think that I have an ignition problem with the stator or trigger assembly not letting all 4 fire past 2000rpm?

The builder is a friend of mine but he is away on a trip for a while so I cant ask him thats why Im asking here.

Any help would be awesome :)

Thanks HG

Re: Not running right?

check fuel first - if wasnt sea-trialed before you got it back then the carbs might not be adjusted properly .
