Not sure how to connect a new Voltage gauge connections to a 1988 Force 50HP...

I have a diagram in my engine manual and the diagram that came with the voltage gauge. The manual diagram doesn't show connections to a voltage gauge. The way the gauge is wired now is inconsistent with the wiring diagram that came with the gauge.

Is there a standard way to wire the voltage gauge?

Yes... Directly across the leads of the battery.
Now if it is an "AMP" gauge, that is different -- it is to go inline on the positive from the battery, and be sure it has the proper shunt (it will come with the guage), and be placed acroos the gauge terminals).

For a dash mounted volt meter, I'd connect the positive terminal of the gauge to the switched ignition switch lead, so the gauge is off when ignition is off. Of course the light for the gauge is tied to the switched lighting system and ground to the ground bus.

Comments?

Thanks.

I noticed the letter designation on the ignition switch in the manual is "I" and the letter designation on the actual switch is "A" (accessories?). I guess the "I" is ignition - are they the same?

THe purple wire is the tach and my manual indicates it as being unconnected. The old switch had the purple wire going to the "I" or accessory pin on the ignition switch. Why would the tach be connected to the accessory part of the switch?

If the wiring is code, the purple is 12v switched. That's the one you want.
