I know exactly how you feel. My ex had a 14 year old son with a complete lack of respect for anything peroid. First time he pissed me off he was pissing off the front of my boat and on it for giggles. I good hard reverse was great for a swim in your own urine:p. The last time resulted in him pushing my 12 year old daughter into a wall and smacking her. Trust me when I say I damn near killed him. I stopped calmed down and called the cops instead. I think he enjoyed his time in baby jail...

Good for you, Heinz! Congrats on being a Dad instead of a friend. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive, but there are times when kids need a Dad more than a friend. That is when you have to do what is right and not what is popular.

Thats why its honor thy father and thy mother, not honor thy children.

One of the reasons I got divorced was my ex's daughter could do no wrong in her mother's eyes. Had a bastard at 14. She was as moral as an alley cat. Her mother couldn't believe it when she was shown video of her daughter at our credit union cashing a paycheck she had stolen from a co-worker. Just one of the many endearing traits of her daughter.

You will find being a Dad first will make them your best friends later on.
Just my findings though after raising 5 of them.

Only had the one son, good boy through school. Lost him his second year of college. Continued to try to be his buddy then last year he decided he could throw his weight around. Decided he could throw it in to dad (literally - mind you he's 6' and I'm 5'5") Well lets just say experience got the best and worst of him. Only hit him once, he went back off balance - broke his leg. Took a few months of the law involved (good thing we live in a small town). I'm happy to say it must of been what was needed - he's our son again. Yes I felt like crap, never wanted to see him get hurt like that but apparantly that's what it took.

Hopefully he learned from that, too bad he pushed his limits...

I agree. My observations have been that too many parents only want to be friends with their kids, not parents.
