Not sure what this alarm means

The alarm on my 93 Evinrude 115 went bad. It wouldn't sound no matter what (did the ground the thermocouple test as well as hooking it directly to 12 Vdc). Instead of replacing it with the $50 replacement, I opted for the $10 Radio Shack buzzer. I connected the purple wire to + and the tan wire to -. I left the black ground wire unconnected. When I turn the ignition to on (not start), the alarm sounds constantly.

Before I start tracing the tan wire for shorts to ground, I was wondering if my cheap replacement will even work. Should the black wire have been hooked up somehow?

Thanks in advance.

would not use a cheap buzzer on a good running motor. fix it correctly.

Pacman, You have hooked it up corectly. Purple wire is +12V accessory from the ign switch. Tan wire should ground when the engine overheats. Black is ground, and is not used for this purpose.

I would start looking for a short in the tan wire, or bad temp senser, on the motor. That motor should have a temp sensor on each head, however one of them is a two wire sender for the S.L.O.W. system, and connects to the powerpack.

Re: Not sure what this alarm means

Thanks for the advice!! I kind of figured I have a short someplace. I know I have oil and that it is working and I know the engine wasn't overheated since it was in the garage and was 30 degrees in there!! I'll see what I can find out.
