Okay, so I have an AQ 190 Ford 302 Volvo Penta 270 around 1978. It has been over heating once it's on plane. I spoke to a different mechanic today (went it to get a part totally unrelated) explained the situation. He sides with what members have said. The bushings are out in the outdrive.

What he mentioned instead of replacing the bushings and removing $800 from my wallet, is that I have a water inlet (?) mounted onto the hull the boat, and take the hose that used to go from the outdrive to the waterpump, and re-route it directly to the new water inlet on the hull of the boat.

Two questions, has anyone done this? (I thought there was, and I was searching for the post but couldn't find it) and would it be something that anyone would suggest? He made it seem pretty easy and foolproof and gave me exact instructions on how to do it, if I wanted to tackle it myself.

Can anyone locate the link to the other member that had done it recently. I'm hoping that this is a good way. And if anyone could get me a part number and the correct name, I would love to give my business to iboats. The lady I spoke to stated that they can't look anything up, unless they have the part number. Thanks again for everything as always. Krazy

Go for it its done all the time, all you need is a 3/4 or 1 in bronze thru hull with a strainer and a ball type shutoff valve.

Here's a link with about your only 2 choices:
transom mount or with a thru hull.
Mercruiser Seawater Pickups

If the guy told you it was easy to do I'd have to believe he is referring to the transom mount as that seems easier than cutting a hole in the hull, sealing it and adding the other plumbing.

Question, what is a strainer, and why would you need a shut off valve- would this be for when you are sitting in the water with the motor off- The strainer I could see in order to keep the junk that's in the water out of your exaust/cooling system.

You need to install a seacock anywhere you have a hole underwater. If the hose ruptures, you need a way to stop the bilge from flooding. You need a seastrainer to filter any large debris which is sucked up from the water and prevent it from clogging somewhere else like a heat exchanger or an cooling passage somewhere. It's significantly easier to clean out a seastrainer.
