Re: not sure what this is on my boat

Looks like either a vent as in fuel tank, or an overflow tube for a bait tank.
The one on the outside could either be fuel tank vent, bilge pump outlet, bait tank drain, deck drain.

Type of boat and more pix would help.

It shouldn't be a fuel vent if it's on the inside of the boat (would kind of defeat the safety features of the vent if it flooded the deck & bilge with fumes).

id go with fuel tank vent as well

I dont think fumes would be an issue it is probably pretty far from the tank itself...

just to keep the tank breathing and not allow suction or a vacum in the tank..

fumes would fall not rise i think.

a live well doesnt need a vent i dont think..

Where are they going to fall to inside a boat? Also, if you have overflow through the vent, that'd cause gas to flow into the hull. Both of those just seem like they'd be huge safety issues & would fly in the face of every other CG safety requirement.

If it's a fuel tank vent on the inside of the boat, it wasn't installed by the manufacturer, it was installed by an idiot!

The only reliable way to find out what it is is to actually inspect it.

How old is the boat and is it mounted on the inside wall of the splashwell? That's where the factory installed the fuel vent on my 1959 Crestliner Mandalay. I presume the felt that would help keep more fuel out of the water, by giving you a chance to wipe it up in the splashwell.

1st, i don't know what it is.
2nd, fill her up with some fuel. if it's a fuel vent, you'll see (or smell) fuel vapors coming out of the part in question during the fill up.

surely it's not a fuel vent imho. sure would be a bad location it seems to me for a fuel vent.

the rust stains around it lead me to think water of some kind?

how about a close up pic? what's on the under side that we can't see of the offending part? any screw threads in it that ya can see?

Re: not sure what this is on my boat

You might want to send an email to Alumacraft customer support:
customerservice@alumacraft.com.

I have a 2010 Trophy, and have emailed them on a several occasions with hull questions. Minor mods I wanted to do, but didn't want to drill or cut without knowing what was on the other side.

They got back to me in a timely manner (1-2 days). With solid answers after going over my pictures and diagrams with their engineers.

Include your pics, and the model and year of the hull. They're great folks to do business with.

Re: not sure what this is on my boat

i emailed alumacraft it is a fuel vent this is what they say .

"What you are looking at is the fuel vent. The cap is to be screwed on to prevent fumes to come out but water to not go in. The cap should be screwed securely but not tight or the fumes will not be able to escape causing an airlock in the fuel system."

thanks everyone

That must not be where I thought it was on the boat then. Glad you found an answer.

Re: not sure what this is on my boat

I'm with those who think that is really stupid, but I checked the regs for a Backyard Builder and:

NATURAL VENTILATION
Except for compartments ?open to the atmosphere,? a natural ventilation system must
be provided for each compartment in a boat that ?
- contains a permanently installed gasoline engine;
- contains a permanently installed fuel tank and an electrical component that is not
ignition protected in accordance with the Electrical System Standard (see page 35);
- contains a fuel tank that vents into that compartment; or
- contains a non-metallic fuel tank.
The ?Natural Ventilation System? must consist of:
(1) supply opening(s) or duct(s) from the atmosphere or from a ventilated compartment
or from a compartment that is ventilated to the atmosphere; and
(2) exhaust opening(s) into another ventilated compartment or exhaust duct(s) to the
atmosphere.
