Not trying to open a proverbial can of worms...

Hello all, I am considering adding a two stroke Mercury / Tohatsu 5hp to my lineup of outboards...

This will be my first "overseas" outboard as my others have all been Evinrude / Johnsons and Mercury models...

I know all outboards are only as good as the maintenance program they operate under, but my question is how long can I expect this Tohatsu to last?

Is it possible for it to last as long as my 1972 9 1/2 Johnson with proper care and maintenance? Or are they plagued with design flaws (ignition, fuel pump and carb failures, leak prone seals, weak drives and gears, etc)???

Thanks in advance,

Billy

With good care it should last 50 years or more, Billy. Because of computerized machining and manufacturing modern outboards have every possibility of lasting as long as the magical, mystical JohnnyRudes of the 50s and 60s.
