Not wanting to get down & dirty

I am thinking that it would be so much easier when doing an oil change, to install one of those oil filter relocation kits on my vehicle and vacuum the waste oil through the dipstick.
Has anyone here ever gone that route? What are the pros and cons from your experiences?

Re: Not wanting to get down & dirty

The remote filters are nice, done that on a couple of cars, allowed me to install a bigger filter. But the drain plug is so easy and with a magnetic type, allows you to have a sense of what's going on in there when things go bad. I think for the most part, the labor to install a remote oil filter is unneccesary if the stock filter is reasonably accessible. My local quick lube uses Wix filters and quality oil so it's easiest to see them regularly. 15 minutes, everything topped off and I'm on the way. Their coffee ain't that bad either.

Re: Not wanting to get down & dirty

It is not difficult for most folks since my drain plug and filter are not in a hard to reach place. I on the other hand have developed some restrictiveness in my ability to reach under my vehicle to adequately perform what once was a fairly elementary task.
I have enjoyed doing the basic maintenance on my vehicles over the years and it is one of the things I would still like to continue doing for as long as i possibly can.
The wife thinks that I make up things to do so I can get out of her to do list... Hardly :D

Ayuh,... The remote filter is No problem,...
But,..
Most automotive Dipsticks, Don't go to the bottom of the pan like a boat's does...

Re: Not wanting to get down & dirty

On some vehicles, like the mid-size Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0L, the remote filter makes it so much less messy.
i.e. the original filter location is easy enough to get to from above, but is mounted at a 20 degree angle, flange down.
So when you spin it off, oil comes out of the filter and runs down and all over everything on its way down to the drain pan on the floor.
If you relocate the filter, you can have it flange up and even do dual filters if you like.

And then you can use more common and lower priced filters like for a Chevy small/big block instead.

You can also install two small screw in oil pressure gauges onto the filter housing to measure pressure loss due to the filter. You then really do not have to change filters unless you see a pressure drop across the filter.

I put a relocation kit on a car I had once. Best money I spent.
YOu'll still need to drain the oil from the pan though.

I'm not sure where I got it from, But when I did the relocation kit I ordered a new drain plug. This on look close to a brake bleeder, except you screwed a hose to it. Used a wrench and opened the valve. Oil drain easily. Once empty you closed the valve and popped the hose off. Close to the Fram SureDrain.

"Most automotive dipsticks don't go all the way to the bottom of the pan, like boats do"

That's another thing, to make sure that all impurities are removed, I would still have to get underneath the vehicle at each oil change to open the drain plug, once there the oil filter is right at arms length.
Therefore it seems that my only alternative is to perhaps look for another way to get at all of the waste oil from the bottom of the pan, if not, merely just relocating the filters ultimately defeats my entire purpose.

There is no rule that says you can't install a hose fitting into the drain plug hole.
And run a hose forward to the front bumper and terminate it there with a drain plug or valve.

Im sure I will get heat off this ..but..

I drain the oil..put the plug back in..put 1 Qt of Mineral spirits in the oil fill..bounce up and down on the front bumper for a few...drain the oil pan again.. take lunch..put the drain plug in..add 1/6 total fluid with Lucas..then top off with Quality Oil ( depending on gas or D would determine your oil choice ).

I have heard of adding some Marvel Mystery to the engine oil a few days of use before changing the oil..

YD.

Plausible theory and interesting concept, Jeeperman, I like it.
What sort of psi will I have to contend with?
Would I be required to use some specific type of hose by going this route?

There is zero psi at the drain plug.
Use the same hose that would be used for the filter relocation.

Re: Not wanting to get down & dirty

google "oil drain hose plug kit"
http://www.wholesalemarine.com/p/ITT-18080-0000/Permanent+Oil+Drain+Hose+Kit.html
For under $50 you will find many. Just need the right length hose.
Or even here at iboats
http://www.iboats.com/Jabsco-Perman...59341425--**********.763207342--view_id.38803

Looks like most of the kit makers hang the end of hose up higher than the engine or at least higher than the oil pan top.
Maybe hang it inside the engine compartment where you can drop it down thru the maze of other parts when it is time to drain.
But as noted in the last link, review your application to insure the new hose and plug fitting wont get snagged off from something when traveling.
You could even replace the end cap with a brass ball valve.

Re: Not wanting to get down & dirty

The only problem to me with the remote filters is most I have seen involve some sort of hoses to and from the remote.
That's additional stuff to worry about for me and not worth it.

Re: Not wanting to get down & dirty

I came across this at amazon, the price is incredible but i'm not sure about the quality.

http://www.amazon.com/Spectre-5971-..._1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1294144370&sr=1-1

It claims to have fittings for the relocation of both, the oil filter and the drain plug. For only forty bucks i will order it , if nothing but to get the proper idea of how this or another system may work.

This other one has a double filtration bypass setup but without the drain plug fittings.

I will most likely be going with a single filter setup when I do, but out of curiosity on the double filter models, Do the two filters differ in function?

Re: Not wanting to get down & dirty

No
Can't remember if the oil passes thru one filter then the next or if the oil flows into both and then out of both.
Parallel or series.
There maybe plugs to install into the filter bracket that allow it to be either way, not sure.
