The battery in this old Sea Nymph is setting on a wooden shelf attached just below the transom on the right hand side (looking forward). Is this normal? It kinda looks home made. I was wondering if it would fit under the last seat... Where do you-all put yours?

Also thinking of not even using a battery. After all a 15hp is not all that hard to rope start!

Thanx,
Ray L.

Wouldn't accessories w/o a generator or alternator suck the battery down real soon? Even a marine grade battery?

only if you run them for a long time. I have anchored to fish at night and ran my anchor light for hours along with trolling motors and the battery still has enough power to start the motor.

Just make sure wherever it is, it's secured....

I'm going to guess that if your 15hp has an electric starter, then it also has a charging system. Charging systems can often be damaged if left un-connected to a battery or load.

Besides, isn't it better to have the battery charging when the motor is running than have to remove and connect to a charger between outings?

I would mount the battery where ever it best suits the need of the boat. If its heavy in the stern, move the battery up front and vice-versa.

Charging system? I didn't think so. Thought this was only a starter that was totally disconnected during run. I'll have to look in the manual again.

Thx.

You don't have to look in the manual. Look at the starter solenoid. If the large terminal that has the positive battery cable attached to it has another smaller wire on it, you have a charging system. If the large battery cable is all that's attached, you don't.

Don't get rectifier envy. Lots of 15hp motors were set up without an alternator (rectifier) so that they could be used either way.
