Nothing but whine from control box

I posted in another thread that I too was getting a high pitched whine yesterday when I went to start my motor but I thought it had to do w/ a dead battery since it was pretty low. Well I charged it overnight and tried again today at lunch and I get nothing but the whine when I turn the key. It starts as soon as I turn the key to on and nothing happens when I turn it to start. It was firing up great on a mixed fuel spray into the carbs on sunday after I'd replaced the switchbox and stater.

Any ideas as to what's wrong now?

Re: Nothing but whine from control box

Just to add some more info and to admit to my own stupidity I had the warm up lever all the way up when I was trying to start the motor on sunday. I later realized it's supposed to be brought back to half way before starting so it was trying to go full throttle when it started but it only ran for a second or two 3 times before I decided to decided to call it a day satisfied that it did indeed have spark, would run and was peeing nicely from the telltale.

I can't believe it was running long enough to have overheated but I'm thinking something obviously tripped in the control box since all I get is a whine from a sonalert when the key is on.

Continuos beep from control box could be
1. engine overheated
2. Overheat sensor bad.
3. Oil warning module bad. Oil problem is beep beep beep.
4. Shorted to ground tan wire.

I would hope I didn't overheat it in the 3 second burst it was running but I'll certainly check the sensors. What would cause the rest of the ignition to not work though? I get nothing then I turn the key to start, not even a click from the starter solenoid. If the engine did overheat is there someway to reset the sensor?

It could be that the shift handle is not properly in neutral. Shift into forward and bring it back to neutral. I have run into this a couple of times with my boat.

I've thought of this but figured that'd be way too easy but I'll check it tonight when I get home.

Well at least this boat project is teaching me humility. I feel like a dumb ***** every time I work on this thing. :rolleyes:When I got home I checked the shifter and sure enough it was in forward. Right about then I remembered the last thing we did on sunday was tilt the motor to remove the trash can of water from below the motor which would of course include putting the motor in forward gear to release the tilt. That'll teach me to check stuff in a hurry at lunch and jump to worse case scenarios.

Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Nothing but whine from control box

Just a quick update and question. The motor will start again w/ the help of some fuel squirted into the carbs but the whine continues. I didn't have the whine before I replaced the switchbox but I also had no spark so I'm not complaining. The only difference is the new solid state switchbox doesn't have a tach relay so the brown wire is disconnected and essentially capped off at the motor. Would the lack of tach signal into the controls cause a sonalert even though the boat's never had a tach installed in the dash and thus never connected to the output on the controller?
