In going thru my remaining stock, I've come across two new reverse gears OMC part number 302517 which is listed as being unavailable since 1988.

Intially I thought the gear(s) were for the the 28hp, 33hp, and 40hp series, but in going thru the books clear back to 1960, these engines have a different number (305293 superceeded to 312869. I checked and the part number of my gear (302517) does not superceed or interchange.

I then thought that possibly these gears were from the older 25hp models from say the 1952-1955 or so era of the OMC outboards. In checking my old ancient books I find that the gears on those models consisted of a complete set (#375861 pinion, forward gear, reverse gear) and a single gear could not be purchased by itself.

If anyone has any information on this gear OMC #302517, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Joe, I have no reference and can't help, but you mentioned it as a 305217, and then a 302517. Is this correct?

Joe;
This may be totally useless, but at the website http://www.dougrussell.com, you can enter parts inquiries using P/N's. Anyway, the only information I got from their site is that P/N 0302517 is the current P/N for that gear and lists for about $123.38. Maybe you can contact them and request more info to find out what you have.

BoatBouy.... The 305217 was a typo. Transposed a number there. I have corrected that boo boo. The gears I have are number 302517. Sorry about that goof.

Erau85.... Thanks, I'll contact them later on and possibly relate my question. I want to sell them via eBay but I'd want to know exactly what they're for before doing that.

Joe,

According to the Parts Smart software for Johnson and Evinrude, #302517 is in the system but not a valid part number. That usually means that it is part of a kit (or gear set) and not available separately.

Remember years back when OMC made specialty gear sets for heavy duty applications, like the 3 and 4 lug gear and shift dogs for the "bullet" gearcse 60, 75, 89, and 85 V-4's?

Hope you have your hatches battened down for yet another hurricane!

I just checked my parts list and in the 1957 35 horse. The propellershaft is 302522 whereas the front, rear and pinion gear are all under one number as a set(376996)for the rest there are a lot of 3025s in that lower unit.I think it is a reasonable guess to say that you are dealing with the reverse gear of a 1957 35 horse lower unit.The reverse gears hardly ever go,it is the forward gears that are scarce and well over $200.
