Now hard 1st start 87 Camry

We changed plugs out this wknd, runs much better - geez I out approx 50-60K on them, now I get engine light when starting, takes maybe 5-6 cranks to start and a rich mix smell outta tailpipe, besides that runs super, 02 sensor? Once it starts will restart immed, but when it sits like at work all day is a hard start - no codes read yet, (assume O'Reillys could when it shows chk engine light), cap, rotor and wires also changed approx 12K ago, any ideas? Fuel pump? injector? Has 163K on it, Thanks guys!

brake warning light or abs light? Low voltage at start up will cause the abs light to come on so if the abs light is on fix the battery light first and see if it resets.

Take it to autozone and have them scan for ABS codes to see what is going on, it is a free service they offer.

so had son (14 and of course me guiding him) swap alternator w/ $85 rebuild from Oreillys, BOTH lights went out - was bad voltage reg in previous alternator, took maybe 45 mins, and its like 96 degrees today!! We saved a bunch of $ doing on own and a good bonding experience! Oh the BEST part was , when he arced the battery loosening terminals, "ZAPPPPPPP", I was rolling!! And of course when he was replacing all, was right behind him and yelled "ZAPPPPPPPP"!!!!! I couldnt help myself scared the crap outta him, boy was he pissed, lmao!!

You big meany. :laugh: So changing the battery fixed the brakes. Good deal. Glad it got you back on the road without the extra lights shining in your eyes. I hate newer cars with the computers.

I bet your son will never forget that experience. His first alternator and a big shock to boot.

I once drove across WI with a bad alternator, I don't remember but it was either the brake light or seat belt light that came on giving me about a 10-15 mile warning that the battery was about dead so I could stop at a garage and have it charged. On my Ford the airbag light came on each time the alternator stopped working.

ez, in my experience it would be wise to check the resistance of your main ground(well all cables to the battery for that matter) from the battery to the frame/motor, with the age of the vehicle it is very possible the alternator is overworking trying to charge a battery that does not need it due to faulty high resistant grounds.

not saying it is the problem but certainly something that should be looked at due to the age of the vehicle.


Also spark testing the 14 yr old while being funny is just rude, but it is very funny....LOL

LOLOL Next, have him search out some spark plug washers!
