okay, so it's been awhile since my last post on this motor. 1978 35hp evinrude

my original problem was that after a day of running, just as i was getting home, the motor sounded like it went into high revs and then just killed. it wouldn't restart without waiting for a bit and then it ran real rough for only a few minutes and then it would die.

so i've replaced the primer bulb and hose. i've replaced the spark plugs and bought some decarb to run through it.

just fired her up this morning (after replacing the plugs, and she still sounded rough but then started to sound a little better, although the idle was still really high compared to normal.

i let it run and it seems as if the decarb was doing some good, as the trashcan that i had the motor sitting in now contained tons of black oil on top of the water. i dumped it out and refilled it.

on the fuel mixture, it says "normal 1 1/4 turns out" so i started messing with the fuel mixture, all the while the engine is sputtering out all this black crap.

then it died and hasn't restarted since. i have taken out the plugs a bunch of times and cleaned them off, and set the fuel mixture back to what it was before, and have waited a few hours in case it was flooded.

i'm now stumped. it sounded like the motor was about to run good again, and now it won't start. any suggestions?
