Now what did I do....

1959 Johnson QD-20 10 hp


Long story short- there is leakage from my lower unit. I was trying to get the flywheel off, and later I noticed the fluid leak. Had it in gear trying to get flywheel screws out. Did I break something? I will eventually get around to opening her up, but don't want to start another project at this point, just want to know what the likely cause is, and what to look for when I do open it.

what does it smell like.....honestly not joking. gear oil has a funky smell, unburnt gas has a gassy smell.

It's definitely gear oil

10hp did you tip it on its side when you was working on it? might just be a leaking seal and when you tipped it the oil ran out. either way its time to take the lower off and see where the oil came from.

+1. She may need an LU reseal job. It's a pretty easy job. Here's a link the the reseal kit you'll need and a link on how to do the job (link is for an 18 hp, but the basic steps are the same.) Good luck. Holler if you get stuck.
