Okay, I tired to connect the tach. What a MESS!! The wiring is so screwed up under the dash. Wires to nowhere, bare wire ends, splices where someone just cut into the insulation, on and on.
Anyway, I found a gray wire that wasn't connected to anything under the dash, checked the engine, gray wire connected there to something I took to be the rectifier because it had a red wire and two yellow wires so I connected it to the send post on the tach. It didn't work but the tach zeroed.
Next I found a purple wire that I had read about before somewhere. I connected it to the send post. The tach registered but only when cranking. Once it started it went back to zero.
So, tonight I re-read the instructions. Gray wire to one of the yellow posts on the rectifier (?) that has a red wire also. Ran that to the send post of the tach. When I tried to turn the engine over the postive battery cable jumped, Yes, it did, jumped.
Took the new wire loose now nothing happens. the starter doesn't even turn. All is deathly quiet!
I am so frustrated now I don't know what to do. No, I didn't see any smoke escaping from anywhere ...
I'm gonna have supper and a couple of beers and wait for some feedback here.
I am fed up with this old boat!
Oh, I am charging the battery now too, hoping that it is a low battery instead of something important and costly...
