How do you clean your test tank out? I have a 55gl Farm grade plastic barrell. I have completd my 4 and 6hp's and got them back to life. I started working on the 9.5 (new project) and when I took the motor out of the tank (after being freshly re-filled with clean water) the motor had up to 1/2" of oil sludge / carbon on it...

How do you get the barrell clean? Toss it and get a new one is too easy for me...

thanks!!

i just let it sit for awhile, the oil comes to the top. skim it off with one of the wifes cooking utensils, put it in a jug and send it to the recycle depot. ( just hide the utensil , swear you know nothing, and use it again! lol)

As noted, skim the sludge off and dispose of the gunk...old newspaper works, too. If you want/need to use that barrel for something else, they make a dandy storage barrel/container for your gas cans...I drilled my plastic barrel at the bottom for a drain and use a livewell plug in it when I use it...when not in use, it does double duty as my outside gas can storage container...got four cans in there...chainsaw, lawnmower, two-stroke for old outboards, and an empty, five-gallon jerry can for all-purpose unleaded. I put the cans up on bricks in the barrel and keep it covered, but if moisture gets in, it drains out of the bottom drain.
The only way to get it spotlessly clean is to scrub it several times with dish soap, water and a stiff brush. Then wipe it out with old rags and let it dry and air out in the sun.

Oil sorbent pads work for me.
