I just purchased a Nissan NSF4B 4HP 4-Stroke outboard and am doing the brake-in using a trash can. The first time I started it up, water was coming out of the check port at all times (~1 hr) although it would change flow-rate. The second time I fired it up water came out of the check port for a couple minutes and then would stop (~3 minutes) all together.
I looked at the part schematics and noticed the outboard has a thermostat. Is water not flowing from the check port after warm-up typical? The motor never seemed to get hot. I could touch it with my hands. After I let it cool down for some time (~2 hours) the water would come out of the check port to start but would again stop after a short period of time (~2 minutes).
Is this typical operation. When water is not coming out of the check port I see exhaust bubbles coming out of the gap where the lower unit attaches.
The NSF4B manual seems to say one should look for check port water during warm up. Is water suppose to come out of the check port at all times?
