number 1 cyl. bad ???

Hi, almost all the old merc 50 hp.seem to have low compresion in number 1 cyl. I now have three! all are 4 cyl and all show conpresion is a lot lower in number 1 cyl .
was this a weakness in the old 70's I am hopeing to get one more going and I havent striped any down yet. I will decarb frist but I dont think this will help. thanks ididit

I guess in the 40 years I have serviced the old merc 4 cyl engines the early 40 cu. in are basicly the same engine that the 44 cu. in. that you have and I have I've never seen that problem. The only thing that might cause it would be that the engines have been over heated at one time and the rings are damaged or stuck try to soak them with engine cleaner then run it and retest compression
