I am rebuilding my starter. Are there any tricks to getting the nut off that holds the bendix on? I can not get it to budge. Also I read that the nut can not be re-used is this true?

Re: Nut on starter

The trick is to disassemble the starter first so you can hold the shaft the bendix nut is on. The procedure will be covered in a OEM service manual. As for reusing the nut, it will be covered in the manual also. My preference is to replace any locking nut once it is removed.

The factory manual says that the locknut should be discarded on either starter because they lose their "locking feature once removed". See pages 7-10, d. & 7-14, b.
