Has anybody ever used the transom nylon drain? I am like several of you and don't feel comfortable using the PVC versions. I have always installed brass but have never liked the corrsion that forms on them. Iboats has a nylon drain that the plug stays with it. Presently I have a hole in the transon that I stick a screw type expandable plug in it. Several times after launching I have had to readjust it do to not getting it set in just right. I am looking for any info on long term durabilty on the nylon type drains.

Re: Nylon Drain.

What color is the nylon?
Translucent white is susceptible to sunlight UV, will become brittle.
Black or gray is ok for several years.

Ditto on wire2's comments - however there is something about a plastic fitting below the waterline that just makes me feel uneasy. I'm sure they are safe and tested --------------- but.

The picture it looks black. Why are most drain plugs brass, why not aluminum?

Aluminum is a very reactive material and will corrode quite easily. On the other end Bronze (most parts are bronze not brass) is quite restraint to corrosion.

A galvanic series has been drawn up for metals and alloys based on corrosion potential measurements in seawater. The further apart the materials are in this series, the higher the risk of galvanic corrosion.

Most cathodic, noble, or resistant to corrosion

Platinum
Gold
Titanium
Silver
18-8 stainless steel (passive)
Chromium steel >11 % Cr (passive)
Inconel (passive)
Nickel (passive)
Monel
Bronzes
Copper
Brasses
Nickel (active)
Tin
Lead
Cast iron
Steel or iron
2024 aluminum
Cadmium
Commercially pure aluminium
Zinc
Magnesium and its alloys

Most anodic or easy to corrode

i've been using the nylon for years, and have not had any problems. it especially like the ones with the inside nut. that way you can really seal them.

Re: Nylon Drain.

I have a nylon plug in one of my boats and it's been there for at least 10 years with no problems.
