Some refreshing news for those of you concerned about American companies shifting production to outside America... ;) :)

By NZPA
Wednesday 28th September 2005

Fisher & Paykel Appliances said today it would locate its new manufacturing facility in the United States in Clyde, Ohio.

In July, the company announced it would be relocating its Smart Drive clothes washer line that is currently located in Cleveland, Australia, and a motor manufacturing line, located in Auckland, to a North American site.

"Clyde is central to our major customers in the USA," chief executive John Bongard said.

"Our motives for moving to an American location were to reduce costs of production, freight and working capital associated with supplying that market, and this can be achieved by being in Ohio."

He said Clyde also offered a good infrastructure with a number of companies capable of supporting the production of washing machines and motors that will be manufactured on the site.

The new plant will employ around 50 staff. Around 10 jobs are going in Australia but there will be no direct redundancies in New Zealand.

A spokesman said it was more a case of "lost opportunities for future jobs," with respect to New Zealand.

The plant is expected to be operational by the end of the current fiscal year.
Dang, Kiwi, the Aussies are buying a road here!

Macquarie Infrastructure Group (MIG) today announced it has entered into agreements to invest US$533 million (A$711m) in Dulles Greenway, a 14 mile (22 km) operating toll road, subject to financing and other customary conditions precedent. The road runs west of Washington D.C. from Dulles International Airport to Leesburg, through Loudoun County, Northern Virginia.

The Dulles Greenway is owned by TRIP II, a limited partnership.

MIG will provide loans against and hold options over 86.7% of TRIP II, and acquire 100% of the General Partner. The General Partner has day-to-day responsibility for the management and operation of the concession.

Mr Steve Allen, Chief Executive Officer of MIG said, “Dulles Greenway has a number of highly attractive attributes that caught the attention of MIG and we have been actively pursuing the opportunity to invest in the road for some time.

“Dulles Greenway is a relatively young, well maintained intra urban toll road with a 10-year operating history and 51 years remaining in the concession agreement. Tolls are established, on application, by the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC).

“One of the most exciting aspects about the road is that it serves an affluent region experiencing strong population and employment growth. Loudoun County has one of the fastest growing populations in the United States with significant housing and economic development expected to continue.

“Although the road experienced difficulties in the early years the region’s strong growth is now reflected in the Dulles Greenway’s compound average growth of 17% for traffic and 26% for revenue between 1996 and 2004.

“This is a high quality, growth asset that will be value accretive to the MIG portfolio. We are forecasting an average yield of 8% per annum over the next 10 years. Following completion of our investment in Dulles Greenway it will comprise 8% of MIG’s portfolio and will be our third investment in the growing United States toll road market, “ Mr Allen said.

We own a Fisher & Paykel washing machine. It's only about 6 months old, but we love it. It's a big departure from the conventional top load washing machine. It is innovative. So far Iwould heartily recommend Fisher & Paykel to friends and acquaintances. So it's good to hear that they are locating in USA!

I give 'em ten years and they move to Mexico or China like everybody else. I'm looking at a career change since the plant I've spent 12 years at has been downsized and passed around like a hot potato. Three employers to date and I've worked at the same plant site!

Here is another one.
Whitley, manufacturers of probably the best quality Australian boat 7m and under, started a manufacturing plant in Willacoochie, Georgia recently.
I think their product is marketed in the USA as "Clearwater" boats.
The are selling not only on the USA market, but exporting from the USA.
Cheers
Phillip

It has just been announced that production of the GTO (for the Aussie market) will cease very soon. Don't know if that includes exports to the U.S.
