O Day Mariner repair

I would like advice on how to repair the joining of the Deck and Hull.
Both the deck and hull are flanged outboard and stapled together. I assume they were bonded with polyester.
A plastic channel covers the joint to provide a rub rail.
There are some areas of the flanged joint that are damaged and the gunwale leaks when the rail is buried.
I am concerned about the structural integrity of the hull-deck joint, and the leaks are annoying .
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks

Re: O Day Mariner repair

Ed, I undertook the same repairs to my 73 Mariner.

I know the deck and hull were only stapled, and no glue/sealant was used! I have repaired the broken sections with fiberglass, and reformed the broken (missing) joints using a technique outlined on Nathaniel B.'s website, search: the boat Orion.
Then I used a Lowes brand sealer adhesive to caulk the deck joint from the inside. It 100% sealed the hull, but the sealant attracts mold. I know west marine sells a better sealant for this purpose. I want to say M5200.
Good luck, we sold our boat, and I miss it dearly. Kids wanted to go back to power boating :(
