I have taken the lower unit off of my 35 horse Johnson and ordered a lower unit seal kit from i-boats. Was wanting to know what the o-ring at the top of the driveshaft is for.(has a space where it fits)? And does this come with the new lower unit kit? I have researched my manual but can not find any information on this. Thanks.

It doesn't come in the lower unit kit. The o-ring is to seal moisture out of the bottom of the crankshaft when you reinstall the lower unit. That keeps the forged steel crankshaft from rusting to the stainless driveshaft making removal for servicing the water pump much easier.
Just find an o-ring at the local hardware store that fits (~1/2" ID, 3/32" o-ring, ~11/16 OD), and grease the splines lightly before reinstalling it.

Good luck!
