o1 5.0 alpha 1 grinding into forward adn reverse

i hate to start another thread about this but i searched and couldnt find anything.....anyway i have a 01 gayliner cierra classic with a 305 mercruiser and alpha 1 outdrive that has a grinding going into reverse and forward i can get past it my goin into gear really fast but it didnt do it when i first got the boat anad it slowly got worse...is this sumthing that is adjustable or does something need to be replaced?...thanks

My alpha 1 gen 2 was doing the exact same thing,, I actually had to slam it into fwd and rev and would end up rev'ing the motor which made getting next to the dock scary to say the least. I ended up having to adjust the shift and throttle cables twice before I got it right,, and what a huge difference.. I just went step by step with my mercruiser maintenance manual,, piece of cake.. Good luck...

You need to have the idle down to 650 to 700 rpm (in fwd gear).
When you put it in gear, DO IT, don't go slow, but you don't have to SPEED shift it either, just put it into gear with some authority. That is how it's done.
Shifting slowly or allowing it to ratchet due to high idle rpm will wear out the shift dogs and you will not be able to keep it in gear.
