Thanks to you guys I have this engine out and apart, cracked block on both sides of the lifter valley, today the rotating assembly will go to the machine shop, all looks good but this did compress some oil/water mix,I want to know I have a straight crank and rods. Before I had this engine lifted out ,I noticed the oil drain hose was pulled out from the hull.Man it seems like that drain hose could fail at anytime.I need expert advise how to re-attach to hull hole, and maybe a shut off valve near the connection at the dipstick. THANK to everyone.

It doesn't attach to the hull - it is simply pulled out of the hull drain hole when you want to change the oil. If you are worried about the hose failing, I suppose you could put a shut off valve at the pan... but if it really worries you then eliminate the hose completely and change the oil through the dipstick. I personally like the drain hose myself.

Appreciate the reply Fishmark .I may need to look closer at it because what it looked like was the hose fitting end attatches to a short line out of the pan and the dip stick "T"s into it,what keeps the oil from running out the hose? There must be a shut off?? Seems I seen small chain behind the hull drain plug.Any info on it would be appreciated.

Re: o6 merc alpha 1 4.3 update

I put a new engine from Mercruiser in my boat in 2003 - a 5.7 liter - it came equipped from the factory with the drain hose. IF yours is like mine, then there is a plug at the end of the hose. It is a simple, basic pipe plug. You unscrew that to drain the oil, and screw it back in. That simple.

To make it even easier, Mercrusier attached the boat drain plug onto the end of that plug with a short wire and swivel. That way you do not loose the boat drain plug.

Here's the way it is supposed to work: Unscrew the boat drain plug.... pull the hose out of the drain hole.... unscrew the oil plug from the hose.... drain oil.... screw plug back in drain hose... push that assembly back into the boat through the drain hole.... leave boat drain dangling there till ready to put boat in water.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP: Don't forget to install boat drain plug BEFORE launching boat. (Yep. As Rodbolt sometimes says, "Don't ask." ;) )
