The HIN is just a 12 digit serial number. It's only required for boats manufactured or imported into the US market from 1972.

For example my 1968 Grew has a 6 digit hull number, and like yours its legally licensed.

If your boat is registered don't wory about it.

Yup - just transferred the reg on mine at Service Canada yesterday and was going to write to you afterward. No issues. Older Canadian boats go on the serial number or, if already registered, by the existing hull number on the boat. Same with insurance - they don't care about the registration - just the bill of sale. In fact , usually when you go to transfer the reg you find that the previous owner never did it! That's the rule rather than the exception.
