Ocean Pro 150 won't idle once warmed up?

I have a 1999 150 Johnson Ocean Pro so I guess it is basically the same as the fast strike. It too is experiencing the same issue as some have posted over the years.

1. Starts up cold perfect and runs until warm then idles slows like normal.
2. Runs great when cold.
3. Runs great when warmed up over 3000 RPM prrrrrfect.
4. Once warm it will not idle.
5. Can pump ball with no changes.
6. Cleaned Tank no changes.
7. Recut fuel hose line ends and retightened clamps no changes.
8. When I take off the intake baffle the carbs look wet.

Did anyone find out for sure the fix. Sir Robin claimed two things fixed his which one fixed it? Warped bowl or dirty needle and seat.

Any help would be appreciated it is making me crazy

This is a new thing? It used to idle properly last season. If not, the timing could be off, or the carbs could be dirty.

If this is a new symptom, probably the motor has clogged carb idle passages. Look at the brass needles on the carbs. Some are hollow. Give them a blast with some spray carb cleaner. If that doesn't get it, you will likely need to clean and rebuild the carbs.

clogged idle passage, out of adjustment idle air screws...link and sync, timing..these are the possible issues i can think of right off hand..check compression.

You have a clogged carb.

A Saturday afternoon and the right parts will help you rebuild them.

Ok so the fact that it runs perfect at idle when cold and runs perfect above 3000 rpm with great power when warm has no bearing on the issue.

If that is true then is there a different path for fuel to take once the engine is warmed up over when it is cold at idle?

It runs like a scalded cat from 3000 to 5500 rpm with plenty of power when warmed up, just won't idle.

Start it first thing in the morning after pumping ball you barely get the key turned and it starts and runs perfect then as it warms the idle decreases from about 1200 to 1000 not in gear.

Could someone explain the big picture as how this engine runs at idle what is happening as far as carb - timing etc. I'm big picture down to small detail kind of a guy.

Thanks for your replys. I'm trying to understand the concept of a (warmed up) perfectly idling 150 Johnson Ocean Pro outboard.

Thanks again

the big picture is you have a power pack that advances the idle when engine is cold, once engine warms up it goes out of the quick start feature. your idle passages are different from the main jets, if it runs great wide open but not at idle or low RPMs it is almost always either idle passages or timing. you need a manual to show you how to set timing.

Thanks that makes it a little easier to understand.

So if it warms up and stays in quick start which you could check with a timing light (and a manual) you know it is timing.

If it comes out of quick start and is running on all 6 cylinders then it must be most or all of the (6) carbs are clogged up in the idle fuel passageway.

Therefore rebuild or at least clean out the idle fuel passageways.

Thanks again I'm starting to get a clearer picture as how to this engine functions.

a manual will help greatly...you need to disconnect quick start to check idle timing

Since it idles perfect when cold and slows down as it warms I would say the timing must be pretty close. Are these engines very sensitive to timing?

you can not guess...you must put a timing light on it with quick start disabled. but i still think you have an idle passage issue, as DJ stated

I think it needs a GOOD de-carb.

If you are the original owner, or not, after 12 or so years of use, the carbs should be completely disassembled and cleaned. Regardless of whether they are the problem or not. Also, a good decarb is in order. If you had done that recently, I think you would have mentioned it. Needs to be done at least once a season in a well used motor. Check the recirculation hoses and checkvalves while you are at it. The screens can plug up with junk, rendering them inoperative. The recirculation system really helps with a smooth idle when it is clean, and all the hoses are in the right locations. After these basic things have been cleaned up, and you still have a problem, then you need further assistance. It costs Very little to do a decarb, and a good cleaning. Just a matter of personal time. Get an OMC Factory manual for your engine. Has all the info you need.
