Hey guys. It seems my 98 ocean pro is not running 100% or starting i should sa . It is a real PITA to get it started for the forst time at the ramp and then the rest of fhe day it fires right up. Normal starting procedure, pump primer bulb til its hard to squeeze, trim motor all the way down, turn key to push Choke in for a few second (it does click when engaged) and turn the key over to start. It turns over a few times and sometimes spits out the prop and the starter just spins. it repeats that a few times til it eventually fires or it repeats that many times until it sputters to life. It bellows out white smoke for a while then cleans up just a little. Is this normal for these motors? I feel like this should start much easier. I changed the plugs this spring when i bought it. Old ones were oil bathed but still ran someho . New plugs are champions QL78YC gapped to .30.

Thanks guys

Primer is to be activated while cranking it over.-----Pushing the key in before cranking is NOT the correct starting procedure !

Just gave it a go this morning with the primer solenoid in while cranking it over. Only difference was it cranked and cranked and cranked beforecit fired. it didn't do the small backfire but still didn't wanna start right away.

Load test the battery.-----Take starter apart for inspection and a simple ohm test.------Post results of a compression test.------No money spent to do these simple checks !

Mine has always been a little lethargic when cold.

It will fire right off, but it usually takes a couple of tries to get all six cylinders to catch.

On top of the test above, check to make sure the primer valve (solenoid) isn’t leaking when priming. Dumping excessive amounts of raw fuel in the cylinders isn’t good. Could be causing your smoke.

Need to check cranking rpm. Even with brand new batterie, my starter seemed to be turning a bit slower than it did when new. Installing a new starter made a world of difference in the amount of cranking to start.

Ok. Thanks guys! Ill test tomorrow and report the results. Mych appreciated. I know the compression was good since I tested it when i bought it but anything can happen I guess. How do you tell if the solenoid is throwing too much fuel at it?

The wee hoses coming off the solenoid have a very small bore.------I doubt you can flood the motor via the primer valve.

So the cranking rpms are in the 300 to 400 range. Im not sure if thats the numbers i should have or something needs replaced. Batterys are 2 or 3 years old but they tested good on a load test.

How exactly would you check if the magnets came loose? I don't see any epoxy leaking out or anything indicating anything is coming loose.
