Ocean Pro Lower Unit

The lower unit for my '92 150 hp Ocean wouldn't engage in reverse. I dropped the lower unit and noticed that the shift lever hardly had any up-down travel. I'm surprised it went in gear at all!. Question: Is it possible that the clutch assembly is the problem OR is it more likely that I have to replace the ##$$$@@!!! lower unit? I've had lower units go before, but this seems different. Is there any hope for a (relatively) cheap recovery?

With the lower unit off, you should be able to shift gears by manually moving the shift rod up and down while turning the driveshaft clockwise.

If the gearcase shifts fairly easily the problem is most likely that the shift rod length was not set to specification.
