ocm 3.0 L cobra wont start!!

hi I just bought my first boat a few days ago. Its a 18'1988 bayliner capri cuddy cabin with a 3.0L ocm cobra. I dont know anything about boat motor. The person who i bought it from say it run great but when I took it out on Saturday night to go fishing the motor start up but wont go forward or reverse. SO I turn it off and try to started again but it wont start. I try a couple of time until me wires from the battery turn hot and the battery run out of juice. Got a new battery and it still wont start all I'm getting is click and some smoke comin from the starter. So here my following question please excuse me I'm new at this:<br /><br />when i swift the throttle forward or backward while holdin the trigger what does that do? <br /><br />does the propeller turn on when i pull and push forward on the throttle?<br /><br /> is my starter gone because smoke was coming out some where near it? <br /><br />and could anyone here tell me where i can get a owner manuel and repair manuel for this boat and motor ?<br /><br />thank you for any help u could give me

you need to be in N to start.. not drive.... sounds like you are trying to start in drive?

I think a good thing for you to do with your new toy is to go down to your local marine repair facility and have them go over how to operate the boat with you. We have people come in several times a year with new boat and are happy to go over it with them. At NO charge. They also have a tendency to bring the boat back for any needed repairs that is beyond their capabilities.<br />As far as your no start problem, sounds like a loose or corroded cable at the starter and without knowing where the smoke was coming from it's hard to say if it's the starter of the battery cable.<br />It's hard to say about how your shifter operates without knowing what kind it is. That's why you should visit your marine repair.<br />You can call Bayliner and have your HIN (Hull Identification Number) handy and they may be able to send you a photocopy of the owners manual. If it is like my boat with a Cobra drive,it will have a Cobra shifter also.The way mine works is:In the center of shifter,biggest round part at bottom of shifter there is a button which has a rubber boot over it,you push this in with shifter in nutral,then with button pushed in you lift up on red lever in handle and push shifter forward to start.What all this does is,releases the drive portion of shifter and alows you to be able to advance the fuel while in nutral.
