regular (that's 92 here in Australia)

hmmm, think this post could be a troll...

I mean, you want to know what fuel people use, but add the statement of "midgrade in older engines" That bit isn't a question, it's a pot stirrer.

Re: octane atleast 89 !

Been running 87 in my 84' 50 horse Johnny and 86 90 horse Rude for the past 5 years. Tried 89 once or twice....didn't make any difference I could see.

Do a search and you will see it is recommended to use 87 octane. The higher octane fuels have additives that 2 stroke outboard don't like too much.

Re: octane atleast 89 !

First you have to identify what 2 stroke outboard you're talking about. There were some Merc's produced up until the early to mid 80's that need more octane.

If we're talking about recreational outboards produced in the last 20 years, and using them as produced, then 87 is all they require.

If you're talking about a recreational motor that's been modified, or a factory race motor, that's a whole different story.

Re: octane atleast 89 !

The answer to this is actually extremely easy, and will be different for everyone.. Most non-performance will run 87 fine..

You definatly need to get a compression test and see what ratio your running at, only then can you determine what octane gas to run..

Running a higher octane gas on a low compression engine does absoultly nothing for preformance, or longevity of the motor..

However if you have high compression and you run low grade gas you will get a ping sound from your engine call pre-detonation. kinda sounds like stones being thrown at your motor. This isnt fatal, but use it as a warning to bump up a few octane..

so save your pennies.

- team_starcraft -

You also have to find out how they get that extra octane. It's usually by adding ethanol to it. 2-stroke oil and alcohol don't get along. The more there is, the worse it gets. Best to avoid those.

very agreed willy, anything that was built pre-2000 really isnt made for that ethnol crap, Unfortately if you live in a big city you dont have much choice.
i will not run it in anything i own, Its not that one tank is going to kill your motor. But the motor was not built for it. it burns at a different temp.
also im pretty sure all kwik-trip gas has 10% or more ethanol... so stay away from kwik-trips..
