Odd Serial Number... what year?.. Common issues?...

Hey there.. I just recently picked up a 9.8 hp mercury outboard model 110. i have no idea what year it is.. but thinking its from 65 to 85 somewhere.. The serial number is Odd in the sense that i cant do any search online or find out anything about it.. The serial is A111853.... The little plate that has the serial number on it does not state the year...Anyone help with that info???

My next questions is about the water that shoots out from the motor from the water pump... We started up the motor and it would only spit water out of the pee hole intermintently... every other second or half second.. unless we reved high then it would come out harder... but while in idle it spits no water.. why??. Is there something wrong with this motor?.. I replaced the Impeller today and it caused a minor benefit but nothing to call home about.. if ya know what i mean... Can anyone tell me if this sparingly spitting is normal. or should it have strong constant stream spitting out...

This engine is a 1985 MERCURY 9.8 M.

Also just as an FYI, This engine started out life in MORRO BAY, CA. That probably means this engine was most likely used in saltwater. Good luck.

Running on the hose might not supply enough water.Run it in a trash can.
Inspect the pump housing.Most small outboards have had lots of exposure to sand and mud.
That can eat the pump and housing.
Try a piece of weedeater string in the hole.

Hmmmm.. Well I haven't ran it on the garden hose... We ran it in a huge trash can... And thats what we came up with... We have completely disassembled the motor and impeller is new... Housing is clean... And lines are clear as well... pee hole is free of debre... And were still have the issue....
