odd shifting problem

Hello, I just bought this 97' wellcraft excel 175 with a Volvo 4.3 and the shift control had three detents, middle neutral, one click forward for forward, or one click back from neut. to reverse. And it has to be in nuet. to start it. Well, the shift handle was loose and fell off, so, I may have actually shifted it while it was only halfway on a few times. I reattached it and now there are four detents. The two middle ones are neut and it has to be on the rearward one to start. Something got out of sync and I don't know what. Maybe someone could clue me in before I take this whole thing apart. Also, I did move some cables in the back behind the engine, possible a shift cable I got out of whack? Thank you, Joe

I would guess at this point that you put the shifter back on in the wrong position. Also, what did you move in the back of the engine? The adjustment,or just the cable routing?

I believe I have it right, but I did try some other positions. How would you account for there being 4 detents instead of 3 though. I didn't readjust the cables in back, just moved it a little over where its sits inbetween the eng. and transom

Well, since no one will respond,is it possible that ya tightened the shift "drag" setting to hard, and it feel's like there is to much tension?

Post a picture of your control.
