We have a brand new shift cable and throttle assembly. Took the boat out today and pushed in the button at the base of the shift lever to put it in neutral to start. Started fine. Put the boat in reverse, no problem.

I know I should have stopped at neutral for a second, but I got a little excited and went right to forward....but it didn't engage in forward, it stayed in reverse and just went faster in reverse as I pushed the throttle lever forward. I backed it slowly to the dock as it wouldn't come out of reverse. Turned off the engine to coast to the dock. After I started the boat it would go forward and reverse, but it was a hard engagement for both forward and reverse.

We went to Cumberland island for a few hours and then home. When I got home, an hour later....got to do some shopping with a boat in tow.....we ran the engine with the hose to flush the salt water. While it was running I engaged the prop, shifted forward smooth. Went to neutral smooth. I really could get neutral on the water. Went to reverse smooth. Everything was smooth in the driveway?

Did I really bind up something on the water slamming it from reverse to forward and the 30 minute bumpy ride home made it better?

No 30 minute bumpy ride is going to make anything better. You could also post it in the appropriate Mercruiser forum located a few headings below Boat Topics and questions [not engine topics].

In your heading you do not indicate this is an I/O, I looked thinking the question was for a real reverse gear (transmission).
