OEM vs. aftermarket parts?

so im just gonna enjoy using this forum, so i have another rebuild questions. as far as a gasket kit ( or any other parts really) would it be better to stick with the Quicksilver(oem) brand, or go with an aftermarket company (sierra is the most popular one ive seen). as far as pistion go i will probably stick with wiseco. mercury states that their products are tested for superiority where as aftermarket just try to fit properly. Ive worked in the body shop business for years and agree that there are pros and cons for each. any input would be appreciated especially anyone with past use of these products.

Re: OEM vs. aftermarket parts?

I have always used Mercury gaskets/parts if they are available, sometimes the aftmarkt parts are a little off as far as fit etc.

I use a lot of after market parts..but some are sub quality..you have to know when its best to go OEM...I use CDI for all my electronics...i have use plenty of aftermarket gaskets as good or better than OEM..but some are not as good.

Re: OEM vs. aftermarket parts?

Wiseco is not a Mercury product it is a aftermarket piston. I prefer a cast piston(Pro,Mallory,Red Rhino,GLM,) as that is what the factory uses .Wiseco's need a little extra clearance to keep from sticking on cold starts and needs to go thru several heat cycles to harden piston as they are soft as butter. Mallory has the OEM gasket set beat in quality and price as their supplier also makes the OEM gaskets for Yamaha I have been told.

Re: OEM vs. aftermarket parts?

well ive been able to find all mercury stuff at pretty decent prices. gasket set 110, piston 98, and all lock rings for 13, the only things are the piston rings. found some on ebay for 85 (compared to 185 list), just waiting to see if its a complete set of 12, if not, i might go with the sierra rings....and those should come in a 12 pack correct?

The gasket set does not come with head gaskets so you will have to order them seperately, also make sure your getting correct piston as from the looks of your block its a 2.0 liter and your year will make it be a top guided piston. Sierra only sells rings per piston so you will need 6 of the 18-3921 to make 1 39-822321A12 ring set. Why do you need snap rings???? The cheapest rings on Ebay i found was below.

Re: OEM vs. aftermarket parts?

thank you for posting that, i saw the parts numbers i had were different on the rings, everything i was looking up was for the set not the kit. as for the rings i thought i might as well go ahead and replace them while im doing the rebuild. this is my first rebuild so im unsure what exactly i need/dont need to replace. if you know of anything else i need to replace while im in the block, please let me know. and thanks for all the information this far.

part# im going by

7446a11 or 7444a11 piston (once i find what bore i need)
822321a12 - new ring number (even though every place besides merc shows this for 2.5 motors)
815791a92- gasket set

Re: OEM vs. aftermarket parts?

If it is a 2.0 liter (3.125 bore) these are Mercurys part #s:
765-7445T11 & 765-7446T11 are the part numbers for .030 pistons.
765-7443A11 & 765-7444A11 are the numbers for .015 pistons.
Your rods should have the casting number of 644-818141 and that tells you it requires a top guided piston. The gasket number is correct and you will need 2 head gaskets part #27-18785T as gasket set does not have them. You also need to do some detective work to see why that cylinder failed.

My view is this: carb gaskets, fuel pump gaskets, something like that which is easily gotten to if the aftermarket part doesn't cut it, I'll take a risk to save a few bucks on a Sierra part. But if I was rebuilding a powerhead, I'd damned sure try to get OEM internal gaskets, rings, etc.

Re: OEM vs. aftermarket parts?

TThornhill, Thanks for starting this thread. It is very timely for me as I am doing my first rebuild of my 2000Merc 200 HP V6 outboard. I have so far looked at iboats, marineengine and merc(parts express) to compare price and availability. Havent really considered the Ebay route yet. Im not a dealer, so looks like Promarine is out.
I havent yet split my bolck so I dont know all that I need , but of course will need gasket set, ring set, and probably one oversize piston. What I see is a huge difference in price(~2x) for Merc VS Sierra or Mallory on oversize piston set and ring sets. Folks on this site seem to have sucessfully used the aftermarket, so seems hard to justify OEM prices....although still wondering.
On the gasket sets, I'm having a little difficulty nailing down the differences in sets by the different manufacturers. For examlpe: the Merc gasket set clearly says that it does not include head gaskets. As I look as the list(mercurypartsexpress.com), it also does not include upper and lower crank shaft seals. However, even though the Mallory catalog says their gasket set(9-64217)is a replacement for the Merc set (815791A00), they told me by phone that it includes crank upper/lower seals, and head gaskets(in my case it is molded o-rings). Futhermore, they siad that it does not include any waterpump gaskets, yet the merc set does. Im still troubled that I have to get this just verbally from an account manager as they did not have a published detailed list.
I think Im feeling a bit vanerable here doing the first large outboard rebuild; for cars and motorcycles, I know where to go for what.

Re: OEM vs. aftermarket parts?

gonafixit,
this is my first rebuild too, and its going extremly well. im waiting to get my block back from the machine shop any day now. i was first concerned about using only factory parts and realized the cost was too high for me. so to be honest i ended up going majority aftermarket parts. one thing i will suggest is get a merc manual. u can find them for free at 1manual.com. and read it good. i read it for about a good 2 weeks before i started and it made everything so far a breeze. also, mercurypartsexpress.com is a great resource to find exactly what the factory parts numbers are. so far the best place i have found for mercury parts is boats.net. prices seem to be pretty good for factory parts, granted i have not recieved my order yet. good luck with your rebuild and i will say this forum has helped me out alot.

Re: OEM vs. aftermarket parts?

TThornhill,
Good point about local outboard shop/returns ect. So does that mean you went with OEM for the main parts? or just ordered the aftermarket parts through a repair shop. I will take a look at boats.net...thanks for the info.
Double yes on the service manual. I have an an online source as well and it is absolutely excellent and vital. My son and I just split the block tonight. Will be sending to machine shop soon.
One other thing. I was wondering about was service bulletins, did not know where to look but just so happen to stumble upon a thread here in the forum that had this link.
http://www.crowleymarine.com/
Type in your ser # and get menu for parts and "service bulletins" (at least my motor did). I'm sure this exist in other places as well.
Hope all goes well with your rebuild.
