One of the local coast guard guys tells a story about a guy who called and was lost (on a fairly big boat). The CG asked him if he had charts. He replied "Yes, but they're in the dishwasher now!"

Even if the above story is apocrophal, I eyewitnessed this other one: Was having lunch at a dock-in restaurant - Maine coast - where there are more ins and outs and hazards than you can imagine. Saw a boat with 4 people close to overloaded approach dock - they ran into dock after 3 tries, tied lines all wrong, etc. Then they get out and go to lunch. As I passed his boat on the way to mine, I saw his "chart": Rand McNally Road Map of Maine. It wasn't even a recent one.

Sounds like they may have actually ended up on a road!

Re: Official Charts????

OK, I know this is an old posting, but I just had to post this. When my brother and I were planning for the Lake Washington sockeye opener, we were trying to decide how to get onto the lake (you would understand if you lived here) and figured we would have to sleep on the boat over night so that we could be on the lake the next day. I found a legal anchorage and put a marker for it in MS Mappoint via lat/lon from the charts. Attempting to get a course and distance from the ramp to our anchorage, I discovered that Mappoint isn't realy geared to understand that the blue stuff is water. Here's the directions to our anchorage:

Time
Mile
Instruction
For

09:00
0.0
Depart Stan Sayers launch on Local road(s) (South)
109 yds

09:00
0.1
Turn LEFT (East) onto Lake Washington Blvd S
1.3 mi

09:02
1.3
Turn LEFT (East) onto Local road(s)
0.2 mi

09:03
1.5
Arrive anchorage

SUMMARY
Driving distance: 1.5 miles
Total travel time: 3 minutes
Driving time: 3 minutes
Cost: $0.08

Wish I had a place to host the map image, but I'll just try to describe it. At the point where the route track reaches "Turn LEFT (East) onto Local road(s)" the track turns off of Lake Washington BLVD straight into the lake and out about "0.2" miles to the anchorage.

I thipnk the folks with the Rand McNally road map would be far better off with MS Mappoint for plotting their course. Hope they remember to disconnect the trailer and tow vehicle and leave them on dry land before turning off onto "local roads."
