I saw today a guy with a 1987 265hp 2.5 EFI mercury motore (offshore) at the marina. He was selling the motor for 5k$ with the 1979 tunnel boat/trailer (esthetically, it's in excellent condition with a custom paint job).

I am not interested in buying the motor (I am posting for a friend that would like to have some information on the boat).
He would like to have some basic information on the motor (maintenance costs, reliability, price, etc...)
We couldn't find any information over the Internet since this kind of outboard is rare

Re: Offshore outboard motors

The 2.5 260's aren't that rare, they were fairly common in their day. They were repalced with the 280's and so on. It's a 2.5 that was built at Mercury Hi-Performance specifically for racing. The Offshore model was what was legal in a few Offshore classes.

Re: Offshore outboard motors

dont really know that much of mercury but i do know is that thing sounds awsome out of the water:D

check compression in the motor then gear lube also spark( most likely theres good spark) then tell us what u find in the motor.

ask him to give u a test run IN THE WATER. do what ever u want with it . floor it. troll it. etc tec check everything.

ask him when he last seriviced it and what he did.

do some general inspections. paint such as sign of over heat. discolored paint at head.

then maybe ask to him to run it on the muffs so u hear it lol:D
