Hi all,

I have just snapped my second starter rope on my 7.5 it was done at the dealer 3 months ago , I am not interested in giving him another $50. I have heard that it is an easy job. I am thinking with snapping this again,Im thinking that it must be a sharp edge on the inside, others have said that it is not because it is not being pulled straight and level from the case.
Can anybody tell me how to do this job?

The reason starter ropes break is the operator feels they need to run to the next county when they pull it. Pull the cord gently until you feel compression and then give a sharp tug. You don't need to pull the cord until it stops. This by the way is why recoil springs break as well. Letting the cord snap back after being pulled is also a good way to break the unit. Yes, installing a new cord is not rocket science. One needs only to wind it in the proper direction with the proper rewind spring tension.

Since we are on the Merc board, I guess you are talking Merc here. I'm in the process of changing my rope too. Mine is a 4.5 horse but I think it is the same. If I'm wrong I'm sure one of the guys here will correct me.
I took the little cap off the top of the hood, there is a nut under there with a tang washer, bend the tang down and turn the nut clockwise, left hand thread, then carefully drop the recoil mechenism out of the hood. Be carefull not to let any of the pieces fall out like I did:redface:then put the nut back on the recoil mount bolt, this will help hold it all together. Last, drive the roll pin out and take the last wrap of rope out. there is a pin in the center of the rope that holds the rope in a slot. This is where I'm at now and was just going to ask the guys here what the hard material was that is around the last few inches of the rope. It almost looks like it is dipped in wax, anyone know?

Its an easy job. Just make sure you know that the bolt is left hand threaded on top. I didn't:eek: and had to buy a new bolt...I think someone before me had the same issue and striped it.

Take your time and pay attention what you take apart. Maybe get a manual (i got mine from the local library) that helps a bit.

Good Luck
