OHMS Test on electric shift

I just replaced the coils in my sterndrive with brand new (Old Stock) Coils and the reading is 7.9 on both foward and reverse coils. I thought it was suppose to be between 4.5 - 6.5 ohms. I have a digital voltmeter and set it on 200 in the ohm section on the meter. There was nothing smaller only 20k. Anyway should this be alright? This is a standard group electric shift stringer 1968 120hp. Its the smaller unit!

Re: OHMS Test on electric shift

before measuring resistance of any component, touch the leads together on the meter and see if it reads zero. If it reads a value (e.g. 1.5 ohms), subtract that from the coil reading... or try new batteries in the meter to get it to zero.
and keep your fingers off the leads while reading resistance... squeezing the wires between a finger and the probe makes the reading inaccurate
also try another meter - that sounds a bit goofy that it only has 2 scales for ohms, but you are using the correct one anyway

Re: OHMS Test on electric shift

Thanks...I am no electrician so yes I was squeezing the leads to the probes. I will try again and check it out! Thanks
