Oil additives for a leaky powerhead adapter gasket?

89 johnson 88 spl (running rough and smoking like mad when first starting up and slightly smoking while under throttle)

So today i looked at the engine while busting out another thousand fixing issues under the dash.... It is leaking black oil under the engine and down the sides of the lower part, (shaft area?). There is a small cowling under the engine bay that wraps around the shaft area? Anyway i took it off and there is a gasket....leaking on both sides. I took a wrench to the bolts and was able to tighten them about 3/4 a turn. I dont know if this will fix it or not but i wanted to try some type of oil additive like lucas stop leak or something.

I googled stop leak for outboards and nothing came up at all no matter how i worded it. So im guessing there isnt a stop leak for outboards? If there is....where would i add it??? the gear oil? or is there a shaft oil plug or something?

anyone got any info on this?

Adding something to the gear oil certainly won't fix that leak.----Replace the gaskets.-----If you have to pay a shop you have to use ----B.O.A.T ---again.

Why don't you forget about all the stop leaks and fix the problem properly ???

More than likely the oil is coming from the exhaust, and the gasket that seals in the exhaust is leaking.
So exhaust fumes and smoke, along with oil residue is leaking out.

The only repair for this is to replace the gasket.
Yes - a lot of work involved for this, but with a repair manual and some basic tools, you should be able to tackle the job.

Take photos of everything before you start disconnecting and removing things.
Lable all wires, cables, and other parts that you remove.

there is no mechanic in a can

there is no "stop leak" for outboards

there is only one way to fix that issue, that is new gaskets and seals

Another option that costs nothing. Just let 'er leak. Won't hurt a thing, except look nasty. If that bothers you, spray with some Mr. Clean and hose it off. My own motor has had a similar leak for years.

BTW, anything that leaks out there was headed for the lake anyway. Just a fact of life.
