Oil alarm with a twist

I started getting an oil alarm this week on my 200 Black Max. I noticed something that seemed out of the ordinary. When the alarm sounds the beep beep beep the cadence of the beeps fluctuate with the RPMs of the motor. As the RPMs speed up the beeps speed up and vice versa as the RPms slow down. I'm hoping this clue will help the gurus on this site help me diagnose the problem. The oil level in the tanks seem to be normal but I didn't run long enough to know for sure. My first inclination that the switchbox may be bad and sending erratic voltages to the alarm. What to you all think? Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Oil alarm with a twist

First of all, please excuse my english, as i'm french speaking...

Hopefully for you, it could be a bad warning module or a stuck float instead of a $$$witchbox...;)

The warning module is a sealed 2'x2' black box located under the fuel pump with a tan or tan/blue wire going to the overheat sensor in the block and two blue wires going to the float in the oil tank.

For the overheat sensor, simply unscrew and ground it to the block and you should hear a steady beep.

As for the low-oil alarm, disconnect the two blue wires that goes from the module to the bottom of the oil tank (bullet-style connectors) and put a jumper cable between the two ends from the module. You should hear an intermittent beep. If so, your module is good and the float that act as a contact inside the tank is probably stuck in the bottom, thus acting as if the tank is empty and closing the circuit.

As for the horn changing sound, it happened to me too. Seems that the horn itself, wich is located is the control/throttle box and activated by the warning module, is feeded in current from the charging circuit, so from a variable source of power, related to your rpm's.

Hope this help.

Re: Oil alarm with a twist

Before you do anymore testing with the engine running put 2-stroke oil in the gas just in case the oil pump failed. Does the alarm sound with key on or does the engine have to be running. If it comes on when the key is on and not running it most likley will be the float in the engine mounted oil tank. An over heat alarm is a steady sound not a beep. If it sounds when the engine is running only it could be the oil module not sencing oil passing through the pump or the oil pump drive gear on the crank failed. Either way oil is the life blood of the engine if in doubt bring it to a dealer it could save you $$$ in the end GOOD LUCK

Yes it only comes on when running. I idled in with no alarm but it starts as the RPMs come up. Thanks
