Oil and gas for a 40hp Evinrude ????

Hi,

Newbie here. Am putting the boat in the water for the first time on Saturday, and realized that while I know there is a 50:1 gas to oil ratio I have no clue what kind of oil to buy. Could someone please tell me?

Second totally "duh" question. And it's a math type question mostly. For the 50:1 ratio for the gas and oil, how much exactly do I need to put in the gas tanks? If I have a 10 gallon gas tank for example.

I don't think it's reasonable to get 50 gallons of gas and then try to divide up 1 can of oil between them so...

Told you it was a "duh" question. :redface:

The ratio works out to about 25 ounces of oil per 10 gallons of gas.

If I remember back in the old days, we just put a pint can of oil into a 6 gallon portable gas tank and shook the crap out of it. 50:1 was a very common outboard mix ratio before oil injection (thankfully) arived.

Use two stroke outboard motor oil, anything off the shelf that says it's two stroke oil for marine use should be fine. Be careful, there are now 4 stroke outboards so don't mistakenly get 4 stroke marine oil.

The oil MUST have a TCW 3 Rating

I purchased what they call a ratio right, it gives you a line for 100, 50, 40, 25 :1 mix ratio's, so for 5 gallons it has a line that you fill the oil up to.
Also on the back of the tcw-3 quart of oil it will tell you how many ounces to put in your gas can.
I mix mine 40:1 and make sure you use non ethenal gasoline. It will attack the hoses and cause lots of trouble especially if you have a moisture issue.

Get yourself one of these (Wal-Mart usually has them) http://www.iboats.com/2-Cycle-Oil-M...96975123--**********.996578845--view_id.56142 shows you just the right amount of oil for each mixing ratio per number of gallons of gas. Handy for the weed-whacker and such as well.

I won't forget about the ethanol, and will get one of those mixing bottles.

The bummer part of it is that the forecast is calling for thunderstorms tomorrow so I might have to wait until Sunday!
